Eala's WTA Finals Bid Ends After Asian Games Detour Draws $10,000 Fine

Alexandra Eala's patriotic gamble has come with a heavy price tag. The Filipina's name appeared with an "X" beside it on the live race standings for the 2026 WTA Finals on Monday, confirming she can no longer qualify for the season-ending event in Indian Wells. The 21-year-old chose to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya rather than contest the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing. Eala, who has climbed to a career-best No. 17 in the world rankings, powered to the women's singles semifinals in Nagoya before falling to China's Wang Xiyu in three sets, settling for the bronze medal — her second Asian Games singles bronze. Because she skipped Beijing, where up to 1,000 ranking points were on offer, Eala could not make up the ground needed to crack the elite eight-player field. Skipping a mandatory tournament also exposes her to a $10,000 fine from the WTA, according to reports. Still, her season has been a genuine breakthrough. Eala became the first Filipina to win a WTA singles title when she lifted the trophy in Washington, D.C., and she has no regrets about putting her country first. Attention now turns to the remainder of the Asian swing, with the Wuhan Open next and a Toray Pan Pacific Open debut in Tokyo later this month.
