Doncic Drops Season-High 53 as Lakers Hold Off Blazers 124-118 for Fourth Straight Win

There are nights when a basketball game stops being a contest and becomes a show, and Friday night at Crypto.com Arena was one of them. Luka Doncic scored a season-high 53 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers needed every one of them to hold off a stubborn Portland Trail Blazers side 124-118 in NBA Cup group play, stretching their winning run to four games. Doncic was relentless from the opening tip. He shot 17-for-33 from the field, knocked down five three-pointers, and added five rebounds and five assists in a performance that bent the game to his will. The signature moment came right before the break, when he launched a 62-foot, three-quarter-court heave that dropped through the net as the halftime buzzer sounded, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and underlining that this was his night. It was his 11th career 50-point game, moving him into a tie for 10th place on the NBA's all-time list, and it extended a remarkable scoring tear. This was his fourth consecutive game with at least 40 points, and the sixth time in nine games this season he has reached that mark. Opposing defences have tried everything — switching, doubling, dropping back — and none of it has slowed him down for long. Portland, to their credit, refused to fold. The Trail Blazers arrived in Los Angeles on a three-game winning streak and played like a team that believed it could win. Deni Avdija was superb, finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists, a near triple-double that kept Portland within reach all night. Damian Lillard added 22 points of his own, and the visitors kept answering every Lakers run with one of their own. But Los Angeles had more than Doncic. Austin Reaves chipped in 25 points, steady and timely whenever Portland threatened to close the gap, while Walker Kessler controlled the paint with 16 points and 12 rebounds. That balance mattered, because Portland's pressure never really let up until the final minutes. The win also carried a small measure of revenge: the Lakers had lost at Portland last week, and this was their answer on home court. The result leaves the Lakers at 8-2, one of the early pacesetters in the West, and hands Portland only its second defeat of the season. For the Trail Blazers there is no shame in this one — they pushed one of the league's hottest teams to the wire on the road — but the story of the night belonged to one man. When Doncic is scoring like this, when even a 62-foot prayer finds the bottom of the net, there is very little any defence in the league can do about it. The Lakers will take the win and the momentum; the rest of the NBA will be left wondering how to stop a player operating at this level.
