De Minaur to Undergo Shanghai Scans After Adductor Injury Wrecked His Beijing Final

Alex de Minaur plans to travel to Shanghai for scans after an adductor injury cut short his China Open final against Novak Djokovic in Beijing on Tuesday, leaving the Australian's participation in this week's Shanghai Masters in doubt.

The 27-year-old world No. 9 was locked in a tight battle with Djokovic when he felt the problem late in a gruelling first set. He retired while trailing 7-6(3) 0-1, handing the 39-year-old Serb his seventh Beijing crown and the 102nd title of his career.

"I was feeling quite good, then I felt something midway through the end of the first set," de Minaur told reporters. "It gradually got a little worse. Felt something in the adductor. I don't know what it is yet. I've got to get some more scans. My plan is to go to Shanghai and get scans."

The setback is a cruel echo of 2024, when de Minaur withdrew from a Wimbledon quarter-final against Djokovic with a hip injury and missed the Paris Olympics singles. Despite the painful ending, he took positives from his week in Beijing: "Everything except for the end was really positive. There was a lot of good tennis. I played some great stuff. Felt amazing on the court."

De Minaur, a quarter-finalist in Shanghai last year, still has a route to the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, where he reached the semi-finals in 2025 — especially after Jannik Sinner announced on Tuesday that he will play no more tennis this year because of a knee injury.
