Davis Double-Double Powers Wizards Past Misfiring Hornets 95-79

Anthony Davis poured in 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Washington Wizards beat the Charlotte Hornets 95-79 in their NBA Cup opener on Friday night. Trae Young added 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for Washington, who held Charlotte to its lowest scoring output of the young season.

The Hornets shot just 30 percent from the field, 21 percent from three-point range and 58 percent from the free-throw line. Brandon Miller led Charlotte with 19 points but needed 24 shots to get them, and only Naz Reid and Moussa Diabate joined him in double figures, both with double-doubles.

Washington, by contrast, lived at the line, attempting 35 free throws to Charlotte's 12, and the gap told in a game the Wizards controlled throughout. It was a second defeat in three days for the Hornets, who now face the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday on the second night of a back-to-back, with their offence badly in need of a reset.
