Dart Comes Through Qualifying to Claim Maiden WTA Title at Guangzhou
Britain's Harriet Dart won her first WTA title, coming through qualifying and beating rising star Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final.

Harriet Dart has won her first WTA title in the most demanding way possible, coming all the way through qualifying to lift the Guangzhou Open trophy. The British world No. 84 beat rising star Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final, turning the match around after dropping the opening set. Dart's week had already tested her nerve before the final. In the semi-finals she saved three match points in a rollercoaster win over Sun Xinran, and she carried that resilience into the championship match against Tagger, the 2025 Roland-Garros girls' champion. After losing the first set, Dart steadied herself, took control of the rallies in the second, and then held her nerve in the decider to close out a milestone victory. For a player ranked outside the top 80, a run from qualifying to the title is a rare achievement, and it rewards years of persistence on tour. Dart has long been known as a determined competitor without a breakthrough trophy to show for it; Guangzhou changes that. The win should lift her ranking and, just as importantly, her standing when bigger draws are made. Tagger, meanwhile, will take encouragement from reaching the final, but the day belonged to Dart, who turned a week that began in qualifying into the biggest title of her career.
