Crossland Returns to Kiwis Squad for Tonga Semi-Final After Serving Ban
Phoenix Crossland has been added to New Zealand's squad for Saturday's Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Tonga in Newcastle, replacing the injured Jacob Laban.

Phoenix Crossland is in line to play his first match since September after being added to New Zealand's squad ahead of the Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Tonga. The 26-year-old was suspended for four matches following the hip-drop tackle that caused serious leg injuries to Penrith superstar Nathan Cleary, and subsequently missed the Knights' NRL grand final loss to the Roosters as well as all three of the Kiwis' World Cup group matches. Having now served his ban, Crossland replaces second rower Jacob Laban in the squad, with head coach Stacey Jones explaining that the young Warriors star will miss the rest of the tournament with a lower leg injury. Crossland's versatility is a major asset for the Kiwis: he can play hooker, back row and in the halves if required, offering vital flexibility on the six-man bench. New Zealand face Tonga on Saturday night at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle — Crossland's NRL home ground — with the winner advancing to the World Cup final in Brisbane against either Australia or Samoa.
