Chwalinska Stuns Injured Swiatek to Reach Maiden WTA 1000 Final in Wuhan
Maja Chwalinska beat childhood friend Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in the first all-Polish Tour-level semifinal of the Open Era to reach her first WTA 1000 final, where she will face Sonay Kartal. Swiatek needed a medical timeout for a left thigh injury midway through.

Maja Chwalinska pulled off the biggest win of her career on Saturday, toppling fellow Pole and six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in the first all-Polish Tour-level semifinal of the Open Era at the Wuhan Open.
The match looked destined for a familiar script when Swiatek surged to 5-3 with two set points in the opener. Instead, Chwalinska saved both, stole the set, and watched her childhood friend fade. Swiatek required a medical timeout while trailing 5-6, returning with a heavily bandaged left thigh and tears in her eyes, visibly unable to push off or chase returns across the court.
The 25-year-old world No. 22 — the qualifier who stunned everyone to reach the French Open final earlier this year — took 10 of the last 11 games in just her fourth WTA 1000 main draw. Swiatek, who had served for the first set at 5-3 with two set points, littered the court with 33 unforced errors and four double faults.
It was their first competitive meeting in roughly a decade, ending with a long embrace at the net. "She's a great champion, a living legend, she won everything," an emotional Chwalinska said. "The fact that I won against her is actually crazy for me."
Sunday's final pairs Chwalinska against world No. 170 Sonay Kartal, the lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist in history, who edged Jelena Ostapenko in two tie-breaks earlier in the day. Swiatek's defeat also handed world No. 6 Elina Svitolina the seventh WTA Finals berth, with one spot still open.
