Chelsea's Emi Martinez Out for Weeks After Jaw Surgery, Confirms Xabi Alonso
Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez faces several weeks on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on the fractured jaw he suffered in the 2-0 win over Everton, leaving Mike Penders to deputise against Tottenham on Saturday.

Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez will be out for several weeks after surgery on a fractured jaw, manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Friday ahead of his side's Premier League clash at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Martinez suffered the injury during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Everton last weekend and was taken to hospital following a collision with defender Jarrad Branthwaite. "He's been better; he had the surgery. We still need to wait," Alonso told his pre-match press conference on Friday. "[He will be out for] a few weeks. Hopefully less than more."
The Argentina international's absence leaves Chelsea without their first-choice keeper for a crucial run of fixtures, and Mike Penders is expected to start between the posts at Stamford Bridge. "He is ready," Alonso said of the stand-in. "He has been training well and played a couple of cup games where he showed he has a good level ... when he came on against Everton, he showed in a few minutes his personality and qualities."
Alonso also confirmed Malo Gusto is fit again after missing the Everton game through illness, but Pep Chavarria will not be ready to return despite increasing his training load. Emmanuel Emegha, yet to feature this season, is "feeling better" but remains a waiting game, while Reece James (knee) and Jamie Gittens (ankle) are not expected to be available against Spurs. Tottenham arrive with their own selection issues: Pedro Porro is back after a month out with a hamstring problem, but Destiny Udogie is sidelined with a knee injury and James Maddison — the match-winner against Coventry on Monday — has barely trained this week and may not be risked.
