Chelsea Captain Reece James Out for Months After Minor Knee Surgery
Chelsea have confirmed captain Reece James underwent successful minor knee surgery after a training-ground injury, with reports suggesting the England defender will be sidelined for around three months.

Chelsea captain Reece James is facing months on the sidelines after undergoing minor surgery on a knee injury suffered in training, the club confirmed on Friday morning. The 26-year-old picked up the injury last Friday and missed the Blues' 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at the weekend, and tests since confirmed that an operation was required. The club described the procedure as successful but gave no official timeframe for his return, with Sky Sports reporting the England international could be out for around three months and unlikely to play again in 2026.
It is the latest cruel setback in an injury-ravaged career for the academy graduate, who enjoyed a relatively healthy campaign last season with 29 Premier League appearances — his most since 2020-21 — before a hamstring problem at the World Cup cost him three games, although he recovered to start the semi-final defeat to Argentina. James signed a new six-year contract in March and has made six appearances this season, but was left out of England's most recent internationals because of injury.
His absence comes at a punishing time for Xabi Alonso's side, with Friday's trip to Everton followed by home games against Tottenham and Manchester United, a League Cup tie with Liverpool and a visit to Manchester City. Alonso is expected to be asked about the captain's condition at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.
