Caufield Strikes 30 Seconds Into Overtime as Canadiens Edge Mammoth 5-4

The Montreal Canadiens stretched their point streak to nine games with a 5-4 overtime win over the Utah Mammoth at the Bell Centre on Thursday night, and it took a moment of brilliance from Cole Caufield to settle it. Utah made the brighter start, with Logan Cooley scoring twice in the opening period — the second on a breakaway — to put the visitors 2-0 ahead. Montreal hit back before the intermission, captain Nick Suzuki finishing a cross-seam pass from Juraj Slafkovsky on his return from a six-game absence, before Arber Xhekaj levelled it with a slapshot from the point. Cooley completed his hat trick on the power play in the second period to restore Utah's lead, but the Canadiens kept coming. Kirby Dach pounced on a loose puck behind Sebastian Cossa to tie it again in the third, only for Nick Schmaltz to put Utah back in front with the Mammoth's third power-play goal of the night. Adam Engstrom then tied the game at 4-4 with his first NHL goal, walking into the slot to finish a pass from Jake Evans. Thirty seconds into overtime, Caufield collected the puck on the wing, faked a slapshot to send Cossa to the ice, and picked the top corner to win it. The victory lifted Montreal to 10-3-3, with the Toronto Maple Leafs next up on Saturday.
