Cardinals Land Rivera From Red Sox in One-for-One Pitching Swap

The St. Louis Cardinals have added young left-handed pitching depth in a straight one-for-one swap with the Boston Red Sox. St. Louis acquired 23-year-old Eduardo Rivera, with Boston receiving 18-year-old minor-league right-hander Juan Garcia in return. The deal, announced by the Red Sox on Tuesday, came a day after Boston designated Rivera for assignment on Monday to clear space on its 40-man roster as clubs reinstate players from the 60-day injured list. Rivera made his major-league debut on April 22, 2026, and finished 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in four games, three of them starts, for Boston. His minor-league numbers were far stronger: 7-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 26 games, five of them starts, split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He still has two minor-league options remaining, and in St. Louis he is expected to compete for a bullpen role ahead of the 2027 season. Garcia, signed by the Cardinals out of Mexico as an international free agent in 2025, went 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA across 11 starts in the Dominican Summer League in 2026.
