Byron Ends Winless Run With Dominant Martinsville Win as Larson Takes Command of Title Race

William Byron ended a year-long winless streak in style on Sunday, dominating the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway to win the penultimate race of the NASCAR Cup Series season. The Hendrick Motorsports driver swept all three stages and led 362 of the 500 laps, a new career high, on his way to a 2.049-second victory and the maximum 76 points. Only seven drivers finished on the lead lap in a gruelling short-track contest.

Byron had already been eliminated from championship contention, but his performance still reshaped the title race. Kyle Larson endured a rough afternoon and finished a lap down in ninth, yet his closest rivals fared no better: Christopher Bell finished tenth and Denny Hamlin sixth, leaving Larson with a 67-point lead over Bell and a 70-point advantage over Hamlin heading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami. Larson heads to Homestead as the clear favourite.

The race also ended the title hopes of Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick and Ryan Blaney, none of whom could do enough at Martinsville to stay mathematically alive. The championship is now a three-driver fight, and Larson holds all the cards.
