Burkardt's Stoppage-Time Strike Rescues Ten-Man Frankfurt in 2-2 Draw at Paderborn

Some draws feel like defeats. Some feel like wins stolen from nowhere. For Eintracht Frankfurt, 2-2 at Paderborn felt like the second kind — and they had Jonathan Burkardt to thank for it.

Burkardt had already given the visitors the lead once, in the 23rd minute, finishing a chance created by Fares Chaibi. It was the kind of goal Frankfurt have come to expect from their striker: sharp movement, a clean finish, no fuss. But Paderborn, newly promoted and playing with nothing to lose at the Home Deluxe Arena, did not fold. Raphael Obermair levelled on the stroke of half-time, finishing from Ruben Muller's assist, and the home crowd went into the break believing.

They believed even more in the 73rd minute, when Marvin Pieringer scored from the penalty spot to put Paderborn 2-1 ahead. Two minutes later Frankfurt's afternoon got worse: Elias Baum was sent off, and the visitors were down to ten men with a quarter of the game still to play, chasing a match that was slipping away.

That is usually the point where a team settles for damage limitation. Frankfurt did the opposite. They pushed forward anyway, a man short, and in the third minute of stoppage time the ball found Burkardt once more. This time the assist came from goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, and Burkardt did what strikers in form do — he finished, and the away end erupted.

It was Burkardt's second goal of the afternoon and it rescued a point that, for long stretches of the second half, had looked beyond Frankfurt. The numbers told the story of a game neither side controlled: Frankfurt had 16 shots to Paderborn's 11, but each side managed only three on target, and the draw was probably fair on the balance of play. Paderborn will feel they let it slip, having led with 17 minutes to go against ten men; Frankfurt will feel they earned it, having refused to accept defeat.

The point leaves Frankfurt eighth in the Bundesliga on 12 points, two clear of Paderborn in 11th, with both sides now pausing for the international break. When the league resumes on November 21, Paderborn travel to Bayer Leverkusen and Frankfurt host Hoffenheim. Burkardt, meanwhile, will go into the break knowing he has now dragged his team out of trouble twice in one afternoon — once to give them the lead, and once, in the 93rd minute, to make sure they did not leave empty-handed.
