Bruins Place Rookie James Hagens on Injured Reserve, Recall Scoring Leader Eyssimont

The news landed quietly on a Saturday morning, the way these things usually do: a short announcement on the team website, a line about injured reserve, and a roster move to fill the gap. But for the Boston Bruins, losing James Hagens, even for a while, is the kind of setback that changes the shape of a season. The Bruins announced on Saturday that they have placed the 20-year-old forward on injured reserve, listing the date of injury as November 5, and recalled forward Mikey Eyssimont from Providence. The team did not disclose the nature of the injury. Hagens has been one of the bright spots of Boston's young season. The Hauppauge, New York native has appeared in 17 games, scoring six goals and six assists for 12 points, and he has looked every bit the player the Bruins thought they were getting when they took him seventh overall in the 2025 NHL Draft. In 19 career NHL games he has six goals and seven assists for 13 points, and his speed and vision have made him a fixture in the top six almost from the moment he arrived. Placement on injured reserve carries a minimum absence of seven days, so Boston will have to plan without him for at least the coming week, and likely longer depending on what the medical staff finds. The recall, at least, comes with its own story. Eyssimont, 30, has been tearing up the American Hockey League with Providence, scoring 13 goals and three assists for 16 points in just eight games. He leads all AHL skaters in goals, paces Providence in scoring, has recorded six multi-point games including three hat tricks, and was named the AHL Player of the Month for October. It is a return to familiar ground for the Littleton, Colorado native. Eyssimont played 56 games for Boston during the 2025-26 season, scoring eight goals and 10 assists, and he has 269 career NHL games across five clubs, with 33 goals and 41 assists. The Bruins drafted him in the fifth round, 142nd overall, back in 2016, when Los Angeles held his rights. For Boston, the swap is a test of depth at the exact moment the schedule offers no mercy. Hagens brought youth and pace to a lineup that needs both. Eyssimont brings finishing and experience, and a hot hand that has been impossible to ignore in Providence. Whether that is enough to cover for a missing top-six rookie is a question the next few games will answer.
