Browns Activate Dillon Gabriel From Injured Reserve, Carrying Four Quarterbacks

The Cleveland Browns have added another arm to their active roster. The club announced on Monday that it has activated quarterback Dillon Gabriel from the injured reserve list, ending a stint that began when Gabriel went on the list with a back injury ahead of Week 1. The move came at the end of the 21-day practice window that opened when he was designated for return, and it leaves Cleveland carrying four quarterbacks on its 53-man roster. Gabriel now joins Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and rookie Taylen Green in the quarterback room. Head coach Todd Monken had indicated during the summer that he was comfortable keeping that many quarterbacks, and he repeated that view at a Monday press conference ahead of the roster move. Tight end Carsen Ryan was waived to make room. Ryan had appeared in six games this season, seeing almost all of his playing time on special teams. Gabriel's return gives the Browns depth at the game's most important position as the season moves into its second half, and it sets up a crowded depth chart in which every practice rep behind centre will now carry extra weight.
