Brighton Stun Manchester United With 3–2 Comeback at Old Trafford

For the opening 10 minutes at Old Trafford, Manchester United could hardly have asked for a better start.

By the end of the night, they were out of the Carabao Cup.

United surrendered a two-goal advantage as Brighton produced a superb comeback to win 3–2, turning what initially looked like a comfortable evening for the home side into another painful result.

Shea Lacey opened the scoring after eight minutes before Mason Mount doubled United’s advantage just two minutes later.

Two goals. Ten minutes. Old Trafford was enjoying itself.

At that point Brighton looked in serious trouble.

But the visitors stayed in the match, and just before halftime they found the goal they desperately needed. Charalampos Kostoulas scored in first-half stoppage time to cut United’s lead to 2–1.

Suddenly, the game felt very different.

United still walked into the dressing room ahead, but Brighton had given themselves something to chase.

And after the break, they went after it.

Pascal Gross brought Brighton level in the 65th minute. The two-goal advantage United had built so quickly was gone.

Then came the moment that completely turned the night around.

Only a few minutes after the equalizer, Maxim De Cuyper scored Brighton’s third.

From 2–0 down to 3–2 ahead.

Old Trafford had gone from expecting a straightforward United victory to watching Brighton celebrate an extraordinary turnaround.

United tried to respond, but there would be no comeback to Brighton’s comeback.

The final whistle confirmed a 3–2 defeat and United’s elimination from the competition.

The result also carried some uncomfortable history for the home side. According to Reuters, it was the first time in 50 years that Manchester United had lost a home match after holding a two-goal lead, the previous occasion coming against Tottenham in 1976.

For Brighton, it was the kind of cup night that will be remembered for a while.

They could easily have lost control after conceding twice so early. Instead, they stayed close enough to United to give themselves a chance, found a goal before halftime and then completely changed the match during a decisive period in the second half.

For United, it was almost exactly the opposite.

The opening was excellent.

The ending was difficult to explain.

Manager Michael Carrick accepted responsibility afterward and described the second-half performance as unacceptable. United now have another setback to deal with after what has already been a difficult beginning to the season.

Brighton, meanwhile, move on.

And they did it the hard way.

Two goals down at Old Trafford after only 10 minutes, they could have allowed the match to disappear.

Instead, they scored three.

And Manchester United are out.
