Borges Stuns Ruud From a Set Down to Reach Basel Quarter-Finals

Nuno Borges produced one of the upsets of the week at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, fighting back from a set down to defeat ninth seed Casper Ruud 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Ruud dominated the opening set, racing through it 6-1 behind a powerful serving display that eventually produced 12 aces across the match. But the Portuguese player refused to fold, raising his level in the second set to take it 6-3 and force a decider. Borges then held his nerve in the third, converting two of his four break-point chances while Ruud managed two of seven, to close out the match 6-4 on Centre Court. The win was a significant one for Borges, who had arrived in Basel as the underdog against a former world No. 2 and 14-time ATP title winner. It also sets up a quarter-final meeting with the winner of the second-round clash between Novak Djokovic and Jan-Lennard Struff. For Ruud, the defeat is a setback in the late-season race, ending his Basel campaign at the second-round stage despite his strong start. Borges, meanwhile, continues a productive indoor swing and will look to extend his run when the quarter-finals begin. The result capped a day of deciding-set drama in Basel, where Holger Rune also needed three sets to get past Hubert Hurkacz.
