Ben Shelton gave himself the perfect 24th birthday present on Friday, beating Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6) in Shanghai to secure his place at the ATP Finals in Turin.

It was the American's first tour-level match since his defeat to Alexander Zverev in the US Open final, and the win carried extra weight: with 4,480 live race points, Shelton has now joined Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz as confirmed qualifiers for the season-ending championship. It will be his second appearance at the event after making his debut in 2025, when he failed to win any of his three group matches.

The timing could hardly be better. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner shut down his 2026 season with a knee injury that has sidelined him since Wimbledon, opening up a spot in the eight-man field — and Shelton has made it his mission to be better than last time, naming Turin qualification and a first year-end top-five finish as his remaining goals.

The victory also leveled his head-to-head with Altmaier after the German won their only previous meeting on clay in Hamburg. Shelton now faces France's Arthur Gea in the third round, with the Frenchman having beaten compatriot Ugo Humbert.

After a stellar stretch — a second Masters title at the Canadian Open and a first Grand Slam final in New York — Shelton endured a rough few weeks, losing both Davis Cup singles rubbers and skipping the Laver Cup and Japan Open to manage his load. His Shanghai return suggests the birthday boy is back on track.
