Barry's Second-Half Strike Earns Everton a 1-0 Win at Newcastle
Thierno Barry's second-half goal gave Everton a 1-0 Premier League win at Newcastle, their second victory over the Magpies in a week.

Everton completed a cup-and-league double over Newcastle United on Monday, winning 1-0 at St James' Park thanks to Thierno Barry's second-half strike. The French forward, who had already missed a close-range chance in the first half, finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute when he followed up after Tyrique George's shot squirmed under Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, tapping home from in front of goal. It was Barry's fourth goal of the season and proved enough against a Newcastle side that pushed hard in the closing stages but could not find a way through Everton's organised defence. The result lifts David Moyes' men to seventh in the Premier League table on 13 points, two points and six places clear of their hosts, who slip to 13th. It also continues a miserable week for Newcastle against the same opponents: Everton had already beaten them at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday in the League Cup. For the Magpies, the late scramble that almost produced an equaliser through Anthony Elanga summed up a frustrating evening in front of their own fans. Everton now host Coventry City on Friday, while Newcastle travel to Fulham a day later, with both sides looking to build on very different Monday nights.
