Audi Fined €30,000 Over Hulkenberg Pit Incident as Russell Faces Potential Double Engine Penalty
The FIA handed Audi a partially suspended €30,000 fine for an unsafe pit release at Sepang, while George Russell could be forced to serve two engine grid penalties before the end of the 2026 season.

The FIA has punished Audi and warned George Russell could face a double dose of grid penalties following Sunday's chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang.
Audi was fined €30,000 — with €20,000 of that suspended — for an unsafe pit incident involving Nico Hulkenberg. The German was shown the green light to leave his pit box while a mechanic was still standing in front of the car, working on a front wing adjustment. The red light was reactivated within 0.2 seconds and there was no contact between the car and the crew member, Audi confirmed, but the stewards still ruled the release unsafe.
Separately, Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord admitted George Russell may now have to serve two separate engine penalties before the end of the season. Russell's late engine failure at Sepang — which all but ended his championship bid — has forced Mercedes to reassess a plan to delay his penalty until the team introduces an upgrade under the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities scheme.
That plan may now be unworkable, leaving Russell facing a pair of grid drops in the run-in as the team scrambles to keep his car legal. With Mercedes' upgraded package not delivering the hoped-for step in Malaysia, the timing could hardly be worse.
Between Audi's pit-lane scare, the engine software chaos that disrupted the formation lap, and Russell's title blow, Sepang's one-off return delivered drama — and regulatory fallout — that will be felt for the rest of the year.
