Ashleigh Gardner Admits Her Reputation Has Been "Tarnished" in Candid Interview on Marriage Fallout
Australia vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has spoken publicly for the first time about the personal fallout from her marriage breakdown, admitting her public reputation has taken a hit while insisting she wants to be the best teammate she can for every side she represents.

Australia vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has finally addressed the personal controversy that engulfed her cricket career, admitting in a new interview that the fallout from her marriage breakdown has damaged her standing in the public eye. Speaking to CODE Sports, the star all-rounder said she never expected the situation to escalate the way it did. She conceded she had perhaps been naive about how public the split with her former partner, Monica Wright, would become, adding that her "reputation has been tarnished with the public". Gardner married Wright in April 2025, but the relationship ended during the Women's ODI World Cup in India last year. Wright later took to social media to publicly allege that Gardner had been involved with a teammate, and questioned why Cricket Australia had kept her in the vice-captaincy. Gardner said in the interview that she understood Wright's perspective on the matter. Cricket Australia has backed its leadership choice. Chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed the board had been aware of the situation and that Gardner remains vice-captain, while adding that the organisation would introduce extra safeguards around conflicts of interest involving personal relationships between players. The all-rounder said life at the top of the sport inevitably invites public scrutiny of private lives, but pledged to be the "best teammate" she can for every team she represents.
