Arthur Gea Stuns Third Seed Ben Shelton in Shanghai Masters Third Round
World No. 56 Arthur Gea beat third seed Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the Shanghai Masters third round on Sunday for the biggest win of his career.

Ben Shelton's Shanghai Masters campaign is over. The third seed and US Open finalist was beaten 7-6(5), 7-6(3) by 21-year-old Frenchman Arthur Gea in the third round on Sunday, the biggest upset of the tournament so far. World No. 56 Gea, playing the match of his life, held his nerve through two tiebreaks to claim his first victory over a top-10 player. The Frenchman stormed to a 5-3 lead in the opening set before Shelton fought back to force a breaker, but Gea edged it and never looked back. In the second-set tiebreak, Shelton faced three match points at 6-3 and Gea converted the first to seal a famous win in just over two hours. Shelton, the world No. 4, admitted afterwards he was outplayed, saying his body wasn't ready. The American was playing his first tournament since the US Open, apart from last month's Davis Cup, having skipped the Japan Open over fitness concerns, and said jet lag had also taken its toll. The result continues a breakout year for Gea, who won his first professional title at a 250-level event in Los Cabos in July. He will face either Francisco Cerundolo or Jakub Mensik for a place in the quarter-finals. Earlier on Sunday, 26th seed Karen Khachanov eased past Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-4, while top seed Alexander Zverev was due to play his night match against Quentin Halys.
