Antonelli Arrives in Austin With First Shot at F1 Title
Kimi Antonelli heads into the United States Grand Prix with his first chance to seal the 2026 Formula 1 championship, but he needs a win and help from his rivals.

Kimi Antonelli has arrived at the Circuit of The Americas with history within touching distance. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver leads the 2026 Formula 1 championship by 102 points — 340 to teammate George Russell's 238, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton third on 229 — and Sunday's United States Grand Prix is his first opportunity to clinch the title. The math is exact: Antonelli must win the 56-lap race while Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower. A ninth victory of the season would also settle it on countback, since Russell's three wins cap him at eight. If the stars align, Antonelli would become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history at 20 years and 61 days, breaking Sebastian Vettel's 2010 record, and Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Mercedes are taking nothing for granted — deputy team principal Bradley Lord put the odds of a Sunday coronation at roughly one in 25 — and Antonelli himself is staying measured. "I know it's very close, I know it's there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can," he said. Mercedes will run their latest aero upgrades on both cars as the season enters its decisive Austin–Mexico–Brazil triple-header, with 125 points still available across the five races after Texas.
