Agarkar's Three-Year Run as India's Chief Selector Ends as Gambhir Posts Emotional Farewell
Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the BCCI senior men's selection committee has ended after more than three years, a reign marked by three ICC white-ball trophies — and head coach Gautam Gambhir posted an emotional tribute.

Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman of the BCCI's senior men's selection committee has come to an end, closing out more than three years in charge of Indian cricket's most scrutinised job. Agarkar, who took over in July 2023, oversaw one of the most trophy-laden stretches in Indian cricket history. His committee guided India to four ICC white-ball finals and three titles: the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup, alongside the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Head coach Gautam Gambhir led the tributes with an emotional post on X: "Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always.. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything." Agarkar's reign was never short of debate. He appointed Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain ahead of Hardik Pandya, left Rinku Singh out of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, removed Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from central contracts, and omitted Mohammed Siraj from the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. He also backed Shubman Gill as India's future leader, handing him the ODI captaincy in 2025, and stirred discussion over Rohit Sharma's ODI future. Few selectors have combined silverware with such unflinching calls — and whoever succeeds him inherits a side at the very top of the world game.
