Abraham Ancer Walks Away From LIV Golf as Breakaway League's Roster Bleeds Out
Abraham Ancer has become the latest big name to quit LIV Golf, with his contract expired after the 2026 season and no return planned — another major defection as the league rebuilds under bankruptcy with a player deadline looming on October 25.

Abraham Ancer has joined the exodus from LIV Golf. Sports Business Journal's Josh Carpenter reported that the Mexican star's contract with the breakaway circuit expired after the 2026 season and he will not be coming back, a decision Ancer is said to have made back in the spring. Ancer plans to play the DP World Tour next year and is targeting a return to the PGA Tour in 2028.
The departure is another blow to a league in turmoil. After Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund pulled its funding and LIV filed for bankruptcy, the circuit is restructuring as "LIV Golf 2.0" for 2027, with a possible $300 million in financing from BC Partners Credit against liabilities of between $500 million and $1 billion. The player deadline of October 25 is now shaping the league's future roster — and the direction of travel is one way. Jon Rahm, who signed the biggest contract in LIV history, has already cut ties, while David Puig and Adrian Meronk have also signaled they will not commit.
Ancer was one of LIV's stalwarts. The 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational champion joined the breakaway in 2022 — earning a PGA Tour suspension — played for Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC, then moved to Joaquin Niemann's Torque GC, claiming his only individual LIV title at the 2024 Hong Kong event. His exit also comes after a difficult personal chapter: the World No. 219 revealed he underwent back surgery after playing through severe back pain for several years, saying he hopes his best golf is still ahead of him.
